The Dixie County Sheriff’s Office is urging residents to stay vigilant following a recent incident where a community member was scammed out of a significant amount of money. In this case, after contacting the victim by telephone, the scammers visited the victim’s home to collect the funds, highlighting the bold tactics used by fraudsters.

The Sheriff’s Office wants to make it clear: Neither the Dixie County Sheriff’s Office nor any law enforcement agency will ever request money from residents, whether by phone, in person, or through any other means. If someone claiming to be a law enforcement officer requests payment, it is a scam.

How to Protect Yourself from Scams

Do Not Share Personal Information: Never give sensitive information like bank account numbers, Social Security numbers, or passwords over the phone or to a stranger who comes to your door.

Verify Before Acting: If you receive a suspicious call or visit, hang up or close the door and contact the Sheriff’s Office to confirm legitimacy.

Be Cautious of Urgent Demands: Scammers often pressure victims to act quickly. Take your time and question any request for money or information.

Report Suspicious Activity: If you suspect a scam, report it immediately to the Dixie County Sheriff’s Office.
