PLACES TO STAY IN DIXIE

From the rustic fishing camp or a modern motel, an RV park or campground, a beautifully furnished house or condo, you'll find it in Dixie County, where wild places prevail.

Secluded at the heart of the beautiful and wild Lower Suwannee National Wildlife Refuge, the town of Suwannee is a unique small community overlooks the river, salt and fresh water creeks and man-made canals. Experience nature at its untouched best while enjoying our waterfront accommodation, great seafood or down-home restaurants, marinas and expert fishing guides. The river mouth opens to a scenic vista of tidal marshes dotted with small coastal islands, an area of shallow waters or “flats” and oyster bars teaming with fish. Natural salt marches and tidal flats attract thousands of shorebirds while acting as a nursery for fish, shrimp and shellfish.

***DCFR Battles Commercial Structure Fire***

On Monday, April 29, 2024, at 10:49 am, Dixie County Fire Rescue was dispatched to the Hardee’s in Old Town, in reference to a commercial fire. Callers reported seeing heavy smoke and flames coming from the roof. The first responding unit arrived at 10:54 and noted there was active fire emitting from the exhaust ventilation system on the roof. Command was established and confirmed that all occupants had evacuated the business and no major injuries had occurred. First arriving crews quickly deployed hose lines and made entry inside the structure. Additionally, crews made access to the roof with ladders and suppressed the fire. The fire was contained to the area of origin with no extension. The building was ventilated and cleared of all remaining smoke. No major structural damage occurred. Local Planning Agency (LPA) Training Day!!
The lands which are now Dixie County have a rich history. With the Steinhatchee River on the west and the Suwannee River on the east, it was prime land for the Native Americans and early settlers.According from one source, the first white man to come to the Dixie area was in 1820, a young man named George Miller who was from North Carolina. He became friends with Suwannee and Bowlegs, Native Americans, and sons of Chief Tigertail and his wife, Suwannee, of the Seminole tribe, who settled in the region around Lake Miccosukee near what is now Tallahassee. With the blessings of the Indians, Miller settled in the area. He planted corn and peanuts and raised cattle and hogs. Ten years later he was to die from malaria and buried into what is now known as Old Town.

Bag A Red Belly

Every mile of the Suwannee River in Dixie County offers great fishing opportunities. If trophy bass aren't striking, probably a bait on bottom will fetch a gorgeous catfish or a cricket will bag a red belly. Some of the best freshwater fishing is among the tributary creeks of the Lower Suwannee. Try Monden and Shingle Creeks!
